The Rabbi Harvey J. Fields Institute, a program of the New Israel Fund, provides a long-range historical and strategic perspective on the serious challenges facing Israel and its democratic legacy today. By fostering high-level learning and conversation, the Fields Institute expands and deepens the knowledge of leaders in the Los Angeles Jewish community about Israel, Israeli democracy and Israel’s relationship with world Jewry.
Launched in September 2015, the Rabbi Harvey J. Fields Institute offers its members a variety of programs, including mini-courses taught by leading scholars and teachers, text-based classes in Jewish values and history, and master classes in arts and culture. These various sessions are intended to enhance the Jewish experience and provide the resources and opportunities to translate lessons learned into real and constructive action.
Rabbi Harvey J. Fields was a community activist and intellectual; he was the visionary spiritual leader of Los Angeles’ oldest synagogue, Wilshire Boulevard Temple, from 1982-2003. After his retirement, Rabbi Fields served as Rabbi Emeritus until his passing in 2014. He played a central role in Los Angeles intergroup relations, Jewish communal affairs, advocacy on behalf of Israel, and the search for Middle East Peace. Rabbi Fields’ commitment to Jewish scholarship and to building bridges between disparate communities serves as a lasting inspiration for all those seeking greater understanding and deeper connections with Israel and the Jewish people.
