Jews and the Israel Question: The View From UCLA

Instructor: Julie Gruenbaum-Fax

Students today are enjoying one of the most robustly creative and diverse eras in Jewish life at UCLA. At the same time they are subject to rising tension surrounding the Israel conversation, which is often delineated by BDS on one end and unquestioning support for Israel on the other. This course will take a broad look at the trajectory of Jewish life across the decades at UCLA to explore how we got to this point, and how the tensions of today will shape this generation’s views on Israel and Jewish identity.

Guest speakers for this Course Series will include:

  • Zev Yaroslavsky (UCLA ‘72), Student Activist, former LA City Councilman and County Supervisor
  • Janice Kamenir-Resnick (UCLA ‘73), Founder, Jewish World Watch
  • Rabbi Richard Levy, UCLA Hillel Director, 1968-1975, LA Hillel Council regional director, 1975-1999
  • Erwin Chemerinsky, Founding Dean and Professor; University of California, Irvine, School of Law
